Samsung Electronics announced the appointment of its very first female president, as its chairman Lee Jae Yong is, strongly intending to break the glass ceiling in the organization. The new female president was revealed during the annual executive reshuffle.
Samsung Electronics said on Monday, Dec. 5, that it has promoted Lee Young Hee to the president role at the company’s global marketing office of the device eXperience (DX) division, where she was previously serving as its vice president. She will now lead the group that oversees the company’s mobile device and home appliance businesses.
As per The Korea Times, Lee has also become the first female president who is not related to Samsung Group's founder, Lee Byung Chul. Prior to her assignment, Lee Boo Jin, the president and chief executive officer of Hotel Shilla, was the only female president in the company, but she is the younger sister of the current Samsung Group chairman.
"As a marketing expert who came from L'Oreal in 2007, the new president succeeded in Galaxy smartphone marketing and contributed to enhancing Samsung Electronics' brand value," Samsung Electronics said in a statement for Lee’s appointment. "By promoting a well-performing female vice president to president, we have been able to show our growth vision to talented women."
Korea Joongang Daily reported that Lee joined and began working at the company in 2007. She has led the marketing efforts for Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones. She is 58 years old and finished her college degree majoring in English literature from Yonsei University. She also took up and earned her master’s degree in marketing from Northwestern University.
Prior to joining Samsung, she worked for Unilever Korea before moving to L'Oreal Korea. Lee Young Hee’s promotion is effective immediately, which means she starts work in her new role this week.
