Prince William has spoken candidly about the challenges of balancing royal duties with personal struggles, revealing that protecting his family is his top priority. In a rare emotional interview with Canadian actor Eugene Levy for Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler, the heir to the throne discussed how he felt "overwhelmed" at times while supporting his wife, Princess Kate, and father, King Charles III, during their battles with cancer.
The Prince of Wales, 43, admitted that 2023 had been the most difficult year of his life, describing it as a time that truly tested him. While Kate is now in remission and the King continues his treatment, William praised both for their strength, saying, "I’m so proud of my wife and my father, for how they’ve handled all of last year. My children have managed brilliantly as well."
Family, he said, always comes before duty. William recalled the damaging media intrusion into the lives of his parents, King Charles and the late Princess Diana, emphasizing that he would never allow his own family to endure the same. "The damage it can do to your family life is something that I vowed would never happen to my family," he noted, adding that he takes a firm stance against press overreach to safeguard his children’s privacy.
While William acknowledged he does not dwell on the prospect of becoming king, he made it clear that he intends to bring meaningful updates to the monarchy when the time comes. "Change is on my agenda," he explained. "Not overly radical change, but changes that I think need to happen. That’s the bit that excites me."
The episode also offered lighter moments, with the future king sharing his admiration for Levy’s comedy films and taking him on a tour of Windsor Castle and a local pub. The interview gives the public an unusually personal glimpse into William’s life, highlighting both the struggles and resilience of the royal family.
