US President-elect Donald Trump got involved in a diplomatic feud with the United Kingdom’s government by suggesting that many (probably he) would like to see former UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage as the UK’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. Mr. Trump, who extensively uses Twitter to convey his ideas, giving out updates to the public or lash out at his critics, tweeted “Many people would like to see @Nigel_Farge represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job.”
In response to Mr. Trump’s suggestion, the UK government said that currently there are no vacancies and stressed “We have an excellent ambassador to the United States [Sir Kim Darroch] and he will continue in his work…….We appoint our ambassadors.” Mr. Trump’s comments have sparked a furor in UK politics. After Mr. Trump’s comments and Downing Street’s refusal, Mr. Farage lashed out saying that the world has changed and it is time that the Downing Street does the same. Mr. Farage went further said that after the Britons voted in favor of the exit, the UK has changed and yet the political class remains the same and more people who opposed Brexit are occupying senior positions. He added that he has known many members of the Trump cabinet for years and he is in a better position to represent the United Kingdom. He said it is hypocrisy when those who previously criticized Trump during his campaign are now trying to be his best friend.
Furious MP’s in the United Kingdom has ruled out any possibility of Farage getting an official position and some suggested the idea as stupid. However, it remains a major scorn for the UK government that Nigel Farage was the first foreign leader to meet Donald Trump privately, well before the UK Prime Minister Theresa May.
We believe, the United Kingdom is free to choose its ambassador to the US and Mr. Trump should be ready to work with anyone but on the other hand, he is also free to comment. For the better or worse, Mr. Trump is proving to be unconventional in many ways.
