While several smartphone makers have reportedly increased efforts in knocking down online leaks, Google appeared to have committed a small slip-up. In an official survey, the company briefly mentioned its next flagship phones, which were referred to in the forms as “Pixel 6” and “Pixel 6 XL.”
Google launched its Games Developer Summit on Monday where some of the game-focused Android 12 updates have been tackled. As part of the event, the company also aimed to gather insights on the new Game Mode APIs through a Google Form for OEMs “to request the backbuffer resize Game Mode intervention for your game on Pixel devices.”
One of the six questions in the survey form (via XDA Developers) asks for which devices the backbuffer resize settings should be applied. And as an example, Google listed “Pixel 6” and “Pixel 6 XL.” It immediately caught the attention of some developers, especially since name-dropped phones are not officially announced yet.
What’s more interesting is that Google still referred to the bigger phone model as the “Pixel 6 XL.” The form in question has since been edited to remove the references of the unannounced phones, which further suggests Google did not intend to make these names public at this point.
It can be recalled that when the first set of Pixel 6 renders was leaked by Jon Prosser, the tipster reported that Google could be ditching the “XL” branding to favor the “Pixel 6 Pro” name. Considering the massive design changes, which have since been corroborated by OnLeaks, the “Pro” name seems more fitting. But with Google’s recent slip-up, it appears that the XL moniker is not completely ruled out yet.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro/XL are expected to launch this fall, but several technical specs details have already leaked online this month. Front Page Tech reported that the standard model will sport a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, 50MP wide + 12MP ultra-wide sensors on the back, 8MP selfie camera, 4614mAh battery, 8GB RAM, 128GB / 256 GB storage.
The Pixel 6 Pro/XL is expected to sport a bigger screen at 6.71 inches with a P-OLED panel, three cameras on the back with 50MP + 48MP telephoto + 12MP lenses, 12MP front-facing sensor, 5000mAh battery, 12GB RAM, and an additional 512GB storage option. Both devices are rumored to be powered by a Google-made chipset.
