Amidst swirling rumors and developer discussions at Gamescom 2024, the PS5 Pro has become a hot topic, with many anticipating an official announcement soon. Despite the absence of a reveal during the latest State of Play, industry insiders suggest that the upgraded console’s release is imminent.
Developers at Gamescom 2024 Hint at Imminent PS5 Pro Release Amidst Industry Speculation
Due to various disclosures and rumors, the PS5 Pro was the subject of much discussion throughout 2024. However, the most recent State of Play aired in late May did not include any announcements regarding the new hardware. As the summer season approaches its conclusion, some PlayStation 5 enthusiasts were still determining whether the more potent iteration had been postponed. Nevertheless, developers initiated discussions at the Gamescom 2024 event, which is currently taking place in Cologne.
In a recent live stream, the Italian website Multiplayer disclosed that it had received information from a developer indicating that the game had been postponed in anticipation of the PS5 Pro's imminent release. I heard a comparable statement during one of my appointments at Gamescom 2024.
Unprompted, a developer who shall remain anonymous disclosed that they had obtained the specifications of the PS5 Pro and were confident that Unreal Engine 5 would function significantly more efficiently on the upgraded hardware than on the standard PlayStation 5. Given the circumstances disclosed by Multiplayer, I am confident that the developer they spoke with differs. Additionally, the hardware specifications and details are already in the possession of many game developers, as the studio from which I received this information is small.
Therefore, it is reasonable to anticipate that an official announcement is imminent. The PlayStation 4 Pro was introduced on September 7, 2016, and released on November 10. In late July, an industry analyst suggested the same could occur again.
Leaked Specs Suggest PS5 Pro Will Feature Major Performance Boosts and Advanced Ray Tracing
According to Wccftech, while awaiting Sony's announcement of the information that the entire industry appears to be aware of at this time, let us review the more credible leaks:
-
45% performance improvement in rasterized rendering thanks to a larger GPU and faster memory
-
Hugely improved ray tracing architecture delivering 2-3x speedup on average, with peaks of 4x
-
Custom machine learning architecture that supports 300 TOPS at 8-bit to power the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technique, Sony's version of Multi Frame Super Resolution based on the PlayStation Machine Learning (PSML) algorithm.
-
PSSR is an ML-enhanced version of Temporal Anti-Aliasing Upscaling (TAAU) that requires inputs similar to NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR and fully supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) pipelines. It also does not require per-game training like the latest version of DLSS.
