‘Outlander’ season 3 may feature changes from the original books authored by Diana Gabaldon. Series co-producer and show writer Matthew B. Roberts promised that the incoming season will be more “exciting” than preceeding seasons with the imminent reunion of Jamie and Claire. Meanwhile, the series has recently resumed production following a holiday hiatus.
According to Moviepilot, Roberts held a Twitter Q&A session to answer some fan questions regarding the incoming season of Starz’ historical fiction, time-travel drama television series based on the original novels authored by Diana Gabaldon.
In addition to sharing details of his writing routines and habits, Roberts revealed that the series may contain some changes in storyline, which divert the adaptation from its original source material. Season 3 is reportedly based on Gabaldon’s third book in the series, titled “Voyager.”
In the original novel, Claire discovers that her husband Jamie has not died during the Battle of Culloden with the help of Roger Wakefield. Claire, Roger, and Claire’s daughter Brianna then attempt to track Jamie down through historical record.
Meanwhile, Jamie struggles to move forward without Claire as he picks up the pieces following a devastating war that sent his country into a desperate state. After twenty years apart, Claire returns to the stone circle where her adventures began and travels back in time to the 18th century to reunite with Jamie.
Roberts was asked by a curious fan about the difficulty of sifting through plot lines from the original book to be adapted on the small screen, to which he replied, “It's a challenge to fit all the juicy parts of the books into 59 mins. And as you know there's a lot of juice in these books.”
He also teased, “Here's what we are going to do... We are going to end season three with a super exciting and spine-tingling... never before.”
Meanwhile, production for season 3 has finally resumed following a break over the holidays. According to International Business Times, Roberts made the announcement by sharing behind-the-scenes photographs of a production set in Scotland. Cast and crew will soon be headed to South Africa, which doubles for Jamaica, to film more scenes.
‘Outlander’ season 3 is scheduled to air on Starz sometime in 2017, presumably on April. It was renewed last June 2016 along with season 4.
