“One Piece” is no stranger to death despite being a Shonen anime. Looking at scenes like those of Portgas D. Ace makes this quite obvious, which resulted in fans being traumatized. The anime even celebrated the life and death of a ship, causing no small amount of heartache. In the most recent episode, “One Piece” did it again while also showing more details about the death of Gol D. Roger. [Spoilers Ahead]
The most recent “One Piece” episode saw everyone’s favorite team of pirates getting chased down by an unstoppably hungry Big Mama. In an attempt to help his new friends escape, Pedro decided to give his life in a desperate suicide attack. With the mink becoming a fan-favorite since his introduction, Comicbook.com notes, this development was naturally going to cause some depression.
Considering traditional Shonen anime tropes, it’s actually quite possible for Pedro to still be alive in “One Piece” despite detonating the bombs that he had hidden in his clothes. However, there’s something about this particular moment that would cheapen its effects if this was actually the case. As such, it’s more likely that the mink is really gone after sacrificing his life for the future of the New World.
Speaking of the New World, some details about the final days of Gol D. Roger were also revealed in recent the “One Piece” episode. These scenes were apparently adapted from chapter 0 of the manga, Comicbook.com reports, which showed who were in attendance during his execution. Among them were Shanks, Monkey D. Dragon, Crocodile, and Mihawk.
The brief look into this legendary figure’s past is nothing momentous, but it adds a nice touch that “One Piece” fans undoubtedly appreciate. After all, it was thanks to Gol D. Roger’s declaration to go find his treasures that the new pirate age was born: A pirate age that Luffy and his team are a part of.
