Russia has not ruled out a trilateral meeting involving President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Sunday, according to state news agency TASS.
Ryabkov said Moscow remains open to the possibility but stressed that officials must first determine what the three leaders would discuss and what outcomes could realistically emerge from such high-level talks.
“The main question boils down to how the substance of the meeting will be formulated, and what we can expect as a result,” Ryabkov said.
The potential Putin-Trump-Xi meeting could take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November in Shenzhen, China. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov first raised the prospect earlier this month as diplomatic preparations for the gathering continued.
Ushakov said Sunday that bringing together the leaders of Russia, the United States and China “would not be without merit.” However, he noted that responsibility for organizing such a meeting would ultimately rest with China as the host of the APEC summit.
“If they are able to organise such a meeting – and this requires a certain amount of diplomatic preparation – then I think it could take place,” Ushakov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
The Kremlin is also working to arrange several bilateral meetings for Putin on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Ushakov said a meeting between Putin and Xi is among those being planned.
Moscow would also seek talks between Putin and Trump if scheduling and diplomatic circumstances allow, he added.
A trilateral summit would bring together the leaders of three of the world’s most influential powers at a time when relations between Russia, the U.S. and China remain central to global security and economic developments.
For now, Russian officials have stopped short of confirming that the three-way meeting will happen, emphasizing that its agenda, objectives and diplomatic preparations would need to be settled before formal arrangements can move forward.
