Since its release back in 2016, No Man’s Sky by Hello Games went from being one of the most hyped titles in history to a dead horse that everybody kept beating on. Undeterred by the hatred, the developers continued to work on the game, polishing it and adding improvements via updates. In a recent batch, the studio finally added multiplayer and hours of new story. This seemed to breathe new life into the game, rocketing it to the top of the Steam Charts.
The charts in question rank games based on how many concurrent players particular games have at any given time. During the weekends, No Man’s Sky ranked just below PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which has been absolutely dominating the non-Valve gaming scene. As Forbes reports, this spike in player participation can be largely attributed to the new Atlas Rises update.
While the new features and contents were not exactly what the game was promised it would be, they are still a huge improvement compared to where the title was last year. At least now, players will actually be able to meet each other, even if it’s not in the form they envisioned. What’s more, there’s an actual storyline now.
As Polygon reports, the No Man’s Sky community is absolutely thrilled with the idea that they can cross over to other player’s space, even in such a limited manner. There are Reddit threads popping up celebrating the added contents, although, there are still many who are expressing gripes about the underwhelming nature of the features.
This is telling because arguably the biggest reason for the hatred directed at the game is the absence of multiplayer. The idea that gamers could explore the vast universe with countless planets together instead of doing it alone was incredibly enticing. After all, going on adventures with friends is a lot more fun in a game like No Man’s Sky. Now, gamers can do that.
