Despite the fervent mockery of video game purists, smartphones are becoming viable gaming platforms. The recent releases of Fortnite Battle Royale on mobile and PUBG Mobile are proof of this concept. With the increasing availability of popular titles for smartphones, the need for handsets dedicated to gaming also goes up. Enter the Red Magic gaming smartphone from Nubia, which is the first to feature built-in RGB lighting.
To be clear, this isn’t the first smartphone to be made and marketed specifically for gaming. There’s also the Razer Phone from the company Razer, which is known for making computers that are also intended specifically for gaming. As The Verge notes, however, the Red Magic really lays it on thick on the gamer profile aspect since it can’t be mistaken for anything else.
A product of a company under the ZTE brand, this smartphone is reminiscent of those hardcore PC rigs that feature all the glowing lights, cables, and liquid-cooling systems needed to run titles at max settings. Unfortunately, it seems the phone is flashier than it is functional, with the specs leaving quite a bit to be desired.
For starters, it doesn’t feature a 120Hz 2160 x 1080 display that the Razer Phone does. The processor is also the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and not the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. The Red Magic is certainly a cut above the usual mid-range Android handset, but some gamers might want a little more oomph out of their phones.
Then again, it is expected to cost around $400, Gizmodo notes. That’s a full $300 cheaper than the Razer Phone, so the Red Magic has it beat in terms of affordability. Considering the specs that it offers, those who only want to be able to play a decent match on PUBG mobile likely won’t have much trouble justifying getting the Nubile handset.
