Rumors about an upcoming PlayStation 5 reveal has been circulating the web since last year, with many bringing up the idea that it could be coming as early as late 2018. Some of the murkier details even include potential specifications of the new generation of Sony gaming consoles. Of course, all of the reports so far have been hearsay and speculations.
The latest batch of PS5 details comes via SemiAccurate, which details some of the things that they have heard from supposed reliable sources about what the console is going to sport and when it will be released. For those who don’t want to go through the whole article, a shortened version is posted over at ResetEra with all the relevant details.
Now, as Forbes notes, SemiAccurate has had some hits and misses in the past when it came to predicting developments in the video game industry. On the matter of the launch, or even reveal, date of the PS5, in particular, 2018 is just too implausible.
With the PS4 sales still going strong, especially with the many incredible games that are set to come out for the console exclusively, Sony doesn’t have much of a reason to hurry up and launch an entirely new generation of its gaming units. Doing so in 2018 would be especially weird since this is the year for God of War and Spider-Man.
There’s also the matter of the PS4 Pro being only two years into its lifecycle, which would make the release of a PS5 in 2018 even more of a stretch. Sony just doesn’t have the kind of reckless behavior that would put its main money-making products in jeopardy by confusing customers about the kinds of products that they can upgrade to.
As for the other details, among the predictions with regards to what the PS5 will be having under its hood are the AMD architecture and CPU in the Navi and Zen, respectively. This is interesting enough as propositions go, but the details also postulate that Sony is investing more in its PS VR platform. If so, more VR software could be hitting the market along with the release of the PS5.
