Migrant crisis series – Merkel’s dream shattered?

Harsh criticism and falling rating is surely not what Ms. Merkel had expected when she opened up doors for migrants, best humanitarian response one could expect from politicians.

Last week, at a party conference chief of Christian socialist Union (CSU) Horst Seehofer openly criticized Ms. Merkel for her welcoming policy towards refugees, while she stands in the back. What an awkward moment to face such a rebuke from her own coalition. CSU is far right wing, sister party of Ms. Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Amid plenty of political criticism she is losing her popularity too. Chancellor Angela Merkel's approval rating dropped from above 70% to below 50% and all thanks goes to her open door policy. Criticism intensified after Paris attack by militants, one of whom war carrying Syrian passport. That was found to be fake later, probably was used to bad name the refugees. And it succeed in injecting fear among public that militants might be entering Germany disguising as refugees.

Terrorists or not, refugees arriving at a pace of 10,000 per day is an economic problem as well as social problem. Thousands and thousands of Muslims are arriving at European doorsteps, an area of Christian dominance. While pace of arrival is equally disturbing as seeing people refusing to go back or going for hunger strike, sewing lips and all.

While intention of Ms. Merkel has been nobler than ever, welcoming refugees and providing shelter and she is right in doing so. She is just the kind of leader world needs, however she need to admit her mistake. She and her team just couldn't foresee the enormous size of the influx heading towards Germany and proper infrastructure was just not enough.

Many are now think that Merkel era in Germany is about to end this year or in coming election. Merkel may not be the favorite choice of her own party members as Chancellor in a party congress to be held next month. Germany is going into election in 2017, when Ms. Merkel is hoping for reelection as Chancellor for fourth time.

However, many undermines the dream she had, when she showed rare humanitarian side and dreams like these have more power if one keeps on pursuing. Ms. Merkel is right in refusing calls for quotas or change her stance towards migrants. If she sticks to her belief and dream, reward will be greater. All he needs to do is manage the influx well and communicate the message of peace well to her own people in Germany.

It is far too early to call for her dreams that includes becoming the chancellor again, shattered. Mr. Seehofer's approval rating dropped after his criticism of Ms. Merkel.
