United States First Lady Melania Trump is a recipient of a “Woman of Distinction” award from Palm Beach Atlantic University. However, the school’s graduates do not seem to agree.
The First Lady is the sole recipient of the award for this year at the honorary luncheon where the award-giving will take place on the 19th of February. The luncheon’s co-chairwoman Eileen Burns had nothing but praise towards Melania upon speaking to USA Today. “Our first lady is an exquisite human being, a magnificent wife and life partner, a superb mother, and an outstanding first lady,” said Burns. Fellow co-chairperson Frances Fisher echoed Burns’ explanation and added that Melania is the latest First Lady since Mrs. Kennedy to be given the award.
But not many people took too kindly to this news. Palm Beach Atlantic University Kyra Kinnaman expressed her dislike of the First Lady being given the distinction in an op-ed piece for the Palm Beach Post. Kinnaman wrote that Melania does not deserve to be awarded this accolade, and went on to list four reasons as to why she disagrees with the decision.
The first reason of which was of the “publicity stunts” Melania is supposedly pulling that is disrespectful to the dignity of human persons, citing her fashion choices during her visit to the immigration detention center. The second reason was that the First Lady’s anti-bullying initiative called Be Best is not consistent with her actions as FLOTUS, bringing up her silence while husband Donald made condescending remarks towards climate change activist Greta Thunberg. The third reason brought up the previous accusations towards the First Lady who allegedly copied the speech of Michelle Obama and lastly, Melania has been complicit towards her husband’s policies and opinions.
Recently, more netizens slammed the First Lady after she shared a video of the renovations going on within the White House. Melania shared a time-lapse video of the work being done in the East room as well as the Red and Blue rooms of the White House. “We were honored to complete the East Room floor restoration along with the wall upholstery in the Red and Blue rooms in 2019.”
Netizens mocked her and commented how the White House will be in need of “exorcists” as well as criticized their use of tax payer’s money towards the renovations. Others also said that the money used for the renovations could have gone to feeding children who do not have anything to eat in schools.
