Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Paris from January 5 to 6, 2026, to participate in high-level Ukraine peace negotiations with the Coalition of the Willing, according to a release from Carney’s office. The meeting comes at a critical stage in the Russia-Ukraine war and is aimed at accelerating international efforts toward a negotiated and lasting peace for Ukraine, backed by strong and credible security guarantees.
Canadian officials describe the talks as a pivotal moment for diplomatic coordination among allies, as the conflict enters a decisive phase. The Coalition of the Willing, made up of key partner nations, is focusing on strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, ensuring long-term security, and laying the groundwork for post-war recovery. A central priority of the discussions will also be securing the return of Ukrainian children who were unlawfully deported during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine, stating that Ottawa is working tirelessly with allies to achieve a just and durable peace. He stressed the importance of deterrence and fortification through robust security guarantees, as well as supporting Ukraine’s ability to rebuild, recover, and create the foundations for lasting prosperity once the war ends. His remarks underscore Canada’s position that peace must not only stop the fighting but also ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and future stability.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Canada has committed more than $23.5 billion in assistance to Ukraine. This includes over $12 billion in direct financial support, along with military aid, humanitarian assistance, and funding for reconstruction and recovery efforts. These contributions make Canada one of the largest international supporters of Ukraine’s recovery and rebuilding process.
Carney’s participation in the Paris talks highlights Canada’s growing diplomatic role in Ukraine peace negotiations and reinforces its alignment with allies seeking a comprehensive resolution to the conflict. As discussions continue, the focus remains on achieving meaningful progress toward peace while ensuring Ukraine emerges secure, resilient, and capable of long-term economic recovery.
