Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro reaffirmed his “absolute loyalty” to the Venezuelan people on Monday, delivering a defiant message as political and military tensions with the United States continue to rise. Speaking outside the presidential palace and surrounded by high-ranking officials, Maduro addressed a crowd gathered for the swearing-in of new local leaders of the ruling PSUV socialist party.
Maduro’s remarks come at a moment of escalating friction between Caracas and Washington. The Trump administration has stepped up pressure in recent months, launching multiple strikes against alleged drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific. U.S. officials have also repeatedly warned that military operations could extend onto Venezuelan territory. Adding to the tension, the U.S. designated the Cartel de los Soles—a group it alleges includes Maduro and other Venezuelan officials—as a foreign terrorist organization, an accusation Maduro strongly denies.
During his speech, Maduro invoked the legacy of former President Hugo Chávez, pledging unwavering commitment to Venezuela’s future. “Just as I swore loyalty before the body of our commander Chávez, I swear to you absolute loyalty beyond this heroic and beautiful history we live,” he declared. “Be sure that I will never fail you—never, ever.”
Maduro was joined by First Lady Cilia Flores, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello—who wore a red cap embroidered with the phrase “doubt is betrayal”—and other senior officials, underscoring the show of unity within the government.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan National Assembly postponed an extraordinary session intended to debate the creation of a commission to investigate the recent U.S. boat strikes. The session was rescheduled for Tuesday, with Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez saying the move seeks to protect the families of those killed. According to U.S. officials, at least 21 strikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats have been conducted since September, resulting in at least 83 deaths.
With diplomatic relations at a breaking point, Maduro’s latest pledge signals his intent to maintain a firm stance as Venezuela navigates mounting external pressure and internal political challenges.
