Dr. Smith (Parker Posey) a.k.a. June Harris will be with the Robinson family when they land in a new foreign planet in “Lost in Space” season 2. But her actions in the first season’s finale have fans asking whether she will go through a major change of heart.
June is a criminal with a long list of offenses who took the identity of Dr. Zachary Smith so she can force her way into the space colonists program. “Lost in Space” season 2 will open with June still in detention at the Jupiter 2. But it is also important to note that if not for her, Will (Maxwell Jenkins) and John (Toby Stephens) would not be alive.
Maureen recognized that and thanked June for her actions. But given the latter’s track record, the Robinsons’ matriarch decided it is best to keep her a prisoner. June managed to execute countless crimes because she is very manipulative. So whether helping John and Will is just a ruse or a genuine act of changing for the better will only be confirmed in “Lost in Space” season 2.
However, fans may also pick up some clues from a previous interview with executive producer Zack Estrin. “She (Dr. Smith) is a character who is wanting to get rid of her past," he told IGN. "She wants to be somebody who will do the right thing.” Does this mean a good version of June in “Lost in Space” season 2 is what the viewers can expect?
Estrin also gave several clues from the first installment that could help distinguish whether June will still be a villain in “Lost in Space” season 2. “For instance, at the end of episode 3, she has a choice to save the guy who’s in the airlock but chose to go in a different direction. And then she was given a similar choice in the present day story with the Robinsons, whether she should eject herself and go to safety or stay and try to help the Robinsons survive. And she actually chose to stay,” Estrin explained.
The cast and crew of “Lost in Space” season 2 have just finished filming earlier this month. And that leaves a lot of room for a possible 2019 release date. But Netflix has yet to make an announcement about this matter.
