Lice Clinics of America Educates Consumers on Safe and Effective Head Lice Treatment; Supports International Safety Notice

Salt Lake City, Utah, Feb. 12, 2018 -- Last week, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) in Ireland released a safety notice on the heels of serious incidents relating to the use of certain topical lice treatment products.  The HPRA is particularly concerned that there may be a lack of awareness of the risk of fire associated with certain topical products that contain flammable ingredients.   

While some lice treatments are flammable and can cause serious injury, Lice Clinics of America does not sell or use those products.  However, as the world’s largest network of urgent care clinics for lice treatment and providers of leading lice-removal services and products, and because the safety of children and their families has been and will always be our first priority we want to make public our support of the HPRA’s recommendations and help inform consumers about safe lice treatment products available and reinforce their safe use. 

The February 7^th HPRA safety notice was intended to raise awareness of the risk of fire associated with certain topical head lice treatment products. The notice stated that serious injury can occur if certain topical lice treatment products are exposed to a naked flame, any heat source or smoking, during the lice treatment process. While this holds true for some topical products on the market, including some prescribed by physicians, there are also safe and effective non-toxic and non-flammable lice treatment options available to consumers. 

“Consumers should not be frightened or confused about treatment options in light of this recent safety notice. Rather, they should be aware that some products contain flammable and toxic ingredients with associated risks, and that there are effective alternatives to those products,” said Krista Lauer, Medical Director of Lice Clinics of America. “We understand that there are many reasons why a parent or caregiver may need to use a topical lice removal product, like the ones described in the safety notice. However, it is extremely important for those parents and caregivers to always read and follow the instructions carefully as those topical products may contain flammable ingredients. If any family is in a situation where these types of products are the only options available, then hair dryers or any other ignition source such as matches, lighters and candles must not be used near anyone during the treatment process.”
