North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has indicated that the upcoming congress of the ruling Workers’ Party will outline new, next-stage plans aimed at further strengthening the country’s nuclear war deterrent, according to a report released Wednesday by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions following a recent weapons test conducted by Pyongyang.

KCNA reported that Kim personally oversaw a successful test of a large-caliber multiple-rocket launch system on Tuesday. The drill was described as demonstrating major improvements in the weapon’s strike power, mobility, and accuracy. Kim was quoted as saying the test validated the effectiveness of the system and underscored the country’s growing military capabilities in the face of what it views as external threats.

Kim emphasized that building a reliable offensive capability and a strong deterrence strategy remains a core policy objective of the Workers’ Party of Korea. According to KCNA, he said such measures are essential to thwart any attempt by adversaries to ignite an armed conflict on the Korean Peninsula. In particularly strong language, Kim warned that the latest test would become a “source of excruciating mental agony and serious threat” to forces that seek to provoke a military confrontation with North Korea.

The launch drew swift condemnation from South Korea and Japan, both of which said North Korea had fired what appeared to be short-range ballistic missiles into waters off its east coast. The test represents another act of defiance against United Nations Security Council resolutions that ban North Korea from developing and testing ballistic missile technology.

While Kim referenced the upcoming Workers’ Party congress as a key moment for unveiling future nuclear and defense strategies, he did not provide specific details. North Korea has also yet to announce the official dates for the congress, though it is widely expected to take place within the next several weeks.

The comments and the latest weapons test are likely to further strain relations with neighboring countries and the international community, as concerns continue to mount over North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs.
