“Jane the Virgin” Season 5 is going to be the finale for the satire/romantic comedy series. Even lead star Gina Rodriguez herself, who plays Jane Villanueva, has confirmed that the fifth installment is going to be the last one, Otaku Art reported.

Rodriguez also revealed that she’s going to direct a few episodes in “Jane the Virgin” Season 5 after spearheading some in the previous seasons. Her directorial debut was well-received by audiences and critics alike. As such, fans are looking forward to what the actress/director has in mind in terms of angles and creativity.

And since the recently concluded season ended in a major cliffhanger, there are so many avenues that showrunners can take to make the finale as memorable as possible. It’s still unclear how the plotline is going to take shape in “Jane the Virgin” Season 5 as the cast and creators are keeping everything under wraps.

The comedy satire is inspired by a telenovela. And following the tropes that this genre often uses, “Jane the Virgin” Season 5 is going to mirror some of these writing techniques. Last season, audiences saw that Jane’s deceased husband isn’t quite dead after all. His appearance blindsided fans since they thought that the character had already been written out of the story given how he supposedly died.

But that isn’t the case at all. “Jane the Virgin” Season 5 will address this plot twist, with the storyline being a complicated one since Michael Cordero Jr's (Brett Dier) return will throw a monkey wrench into the budding relationship between Jane and Justin (Rafael Solano).

Fortunately, The CW – the show’s mother network – greenlighted 19 episodes for “Jane the Virgin” Season 5, which will give showrunners a lot of room to tie loose ends and tidy up the ending. The CW has yet to announce when exactly the show is returning but it’s confirmed it will deviate from its usual October air date. Instead, it’s speculated that the comedy satire will drop sometime around 2019, perhaps in the first quarter of the year.
