Hyundai Motor Group proudly presented its TIGER robotic vehicle on Feb. 10. This is the South Korean company’s second UMV or Ultimate Mobility Vehicle.
This is a unique concept because the robot was designed to do a lot of things, including carrying various payloads while moving on difficult ground. In any case, the robot has been named TIGER as it is the acronym for Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot.
The unveiling of Hyundai’s latest innovation in the robotic field
As per The Korea Times, Hyundai Motor Group created TIGER by fusing mobility and technology together. It was the company’s mobility division, the New Horizons Studio, that was put in charge of the development of this new smart robot. The studio worked with Autodesk, the American engineering design software firm, for this project.
It was said that the engineers at Hyundai’s New Horizons Studio that is headquartered in California, made the four-legged robot for the purpose of transporting cargo over tough terrains. The overall concept is sophisticated, with a range of sensors for remote observation functionality.
The advanced moving machine can also connect to unmanned UAVs or aerial vehicles. The robot can easily deliver goods to the most inaccessible places.
Features - What the TIGER can do
Based on the press release, aside from what has been mentioned already, the TIGER concept vehicle has many other capabilities. It can walk through remote and inaccessible spots and can be used as an exploration platform since it can traverse even through rough grounds.
It is fitted with legs and a wheel locomotion system that can be controlled to face any direction. The load that it can carry on this body is also secured since it is placed inside the TIGER’s body. It can deliver any goods and even aid packages for emergency circumstances.
“Vehicles like TIGER, and the technologies underpinning it, give us an opportunity to push our imaginations,” Dr. John Suh, New Horizons Studio’s chief, said in the release. “We are constantly looking at ways to rethink vehicle design and development and re-define the future of transportation and mobility.”
Meanwhile, TIGER’s UMV concept with moveable legs was previously shown at the 2019 Consumer Electronic Show (CES). This is Hyundai Motor Group’s first-ever UMV.
