'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Release Date, Cast and Spoilers: Why is it Shorter Than Season 1?

Here is everything we know about the upcoming "House of the Dragon" Season 2.

“House of the Dragon” Season 2 is underway after the series premiere became HBO's biggest launch in history, generating "unprecedented demand" in Europe and nearly 10 million people in the United States. However, some fans are wondering as to why the imminent second installment is shorter than Season 1.

There is no denying that “House of the Dragon” is 2022's biggest success story on television. It beat the odds set by the devastating reception to the “Game of Thrones” final season, an extinction-level event for the franchise's place in mainstream culture.

The prequel takes place 172 years before the Mad Queen's birth and concentrates on the “Dance of the Dragons,” a notorious civil conflict that brought the Targaryen dynasty to its knees. The Dance began with an unexpected death in the Season 1 finale. Here is everything we know about the upcoming “House of the Dragon” Season 2.

House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Release Date

“House of the Dragon” Season 2 will premiere in early summer 2024. Variety recently claimed that HBO is aiming for a summer 2024 premiere for the second season following the end of the writers' strike.

The development for “House of the Dragon” Season 2 began in August 2022, with filming beginning on April 11 of this year. Despite the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which halted many high-profile productions, “House of the Dragon” was not among those impacted.

Filming for “House of the Dragon” Season 2 continued as scheduled, as George R. R. Martin confirmed in a May 8 blog post. “The second season started filming April 11 and will continue in London and Wales. The scripts for the eight episodes were finished months ago, long before the strike began. Every episode has gone through four or five drafts and numerous rounds of revisions to address HBO notes, my notes, budget concerns, etc. The writers have done their jobs; the rest is in the hands of the directors, cast, and crew, and of course, the dragons,” the brain behind “Game of Thrones” assured fans.

House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Cast

The cast members fans can expect to return in “House of the Dragon” Season 2 include Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Lady Alicent Hightower, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen, Phia Saban as Helaena Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole and Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling.

Due to the timelime, viewers won't be seeing Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as the younger versions of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lady Alicent Hightower, respectively, in “House of the Dragon” Season 2. Fans may also expect new actors to join, which include Simon Russell Beale as Ser Simon Strong, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayn Hightower, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, and Amanda Collin as Jeyne Arryn.

House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Spoilers

Although no official narrative details for “House of the Dragon” Season 2 have been released at the time of writing, avid followers of the show may expect a battle story to unfold in the following installment. Most, if not all, fans are aware that “House of the Dragon” focuses on the Targaryens, whereas “Game of Thrones” is concerned with the resurrection of the White Walkers as well as the sweeping battle for the Iron Throne.

Graham McTavish, who plays Ser Harrold Westerling, previously teased what might happen in this universe in “House of the Dragon” Season 2. “I think the way that it’s going, is it’s leading to civil war. Civil war is that great thing that countries indulge in when they haven’t got anybody else to go and fight, they seem to just like fighting amongst themselves just to keep their hand in, and this is no different. They’ve had peace for a long, long time, and suddenly they are quite literally destroying the kingdom from within and that’s what makes it so interesting, so I would expect more of that – more division, more taking sides,” the actor told Metro.

House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode Count

House of the Dragon Season 2 will be shorter than the previous season, with only eight episodes as opposed to ten in the first season. Clare Kilner, the show's director, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the new season, which features "eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode... and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour."

While “House of the Dragon” Season 2 may have fewer episodes, don't expect much fluff, as each week will provide significant storyline advancements. “[Showrunner Ryan Condal’s] decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events,” Clare added.
