Known for its rebellious activities against governments and huge companies committing acts that it deems immoral or unjust, the hacker “group” Anonymous has earned a reputation for being the champion of common folk. However, it seems one “member” of the disparate organization has gone off the deep end by saying that NASA is going to announce the existence of aliens. This was not the case.
For some context, Anonymous is not a group in the traditional sense, The Washington Post reports. It’s basically a label that absolutely any hacker can take on, simply because anyone can be Anonymous. That’s the whole point. In this instance, the person responsible for the hubbub is basically someone who simply took on the brand for himself with his YouTube channel Anonymous Global.
In a video released on June 20th, the supposed hacker claimed that NASA had evidence for other lifeforms in the universe and would reveal their existence. Of course, many notable figures in different fields have already posed the possibility of there being life on other planets. However, as NASA shortly confirmed, there has never been any definitive proof that this was the case.
Much of the video was spent pointing out recent discoveries of properties on other worlds or space, in general, that was indicative of life being probable outside of Earth, the International Business Times reports. However, while these discoveries were published and verified, none of them constitute as evidence that there are aliens within the Solar System or beyond it.
Despite the clear ambiguity and the video’s outright similarities with conspiracy theories, numerous news outlets still picked up on the topic and delivered it as news. Even Russia’s Sputnik News gave the rumor some credibility by speculating that the US government might really have discovered life on other planets. Fortunately, the outlet noted at the end that this was all a hoax.
