Given how unusual 2020 has been due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019, and considering that the internet hasn't been teeming with news of the newest iteration of the action camera, it is unsure that a GoPro Hero 9 will be released.
However, considering that for the last decade, GoPro has been releasing the latest iteration of its action camera either in September or October, we can't help but expect one.
Whether or not GoPro will have a new action camera in two or three month's time, there are a few upgrades and features that we would love to see on it.
Lens Cover
This is not a new feature or an upgrade, but for sure GoPro users would like to have the lens cover back after it went missing on the 8. There really wasn’t any good reason for GoPro to have removed it except that perhaps it wanted users to avail of the GoPro Plus, which costs $4.99 (£4.99/AU$5.83) per month cloud storage and insurance plan. The plan allows users to have a damaged lens replaced up to twice a year.
It would be nice for the GoPro Hero 9 to have the lens cover as it would be cheaper to have it replaced than avail of the GoPro Plus.
4K Slo-mo Mode
An expected feature for the new action camera is a step up in the capture mode as the 8 also did not get one. Because it is an action camera, it would be appropriate to be able to shoot 4K at 120fps in a sunny environment.
Faster Processor
And, if the 9 is to get a 4K slo-mo mode, then it would need a faster processor and an image signal processor that is heftier. And, it would also be about time to get this upgrade because GoPro cameras have been using the GP1 CPU since its sixth iteration.
Edge-to-edge Screen
Users would love to see a larger and sharper screen on the new action camera because it would make it easier to navigate the menu system.
While we won’t be expecting all these upgrades and features on the GoPro Hero 9, still, it won’t be bad to be hopeful for one or two.
