Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a people-centered approach to artificial intelligence (AI) development during his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai on Friday. His remarks highlighted China's vision for responsible AI growth while promoting broader international cooperation.
Xi stressed that AI should be developed to benefit people and society rather than deepen global inequalities. He warned against the emergence of "new historical injustices" driven by unequal access to advanced AI technologies and resources, particularly between developed and developing nations.
The Chinese leader said China is committed to supporting AI capacity building across developing countries, helping them access technology, talent, and innovation opportunities. According to Xi, narrowing the AI gap is essential to ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence are shared more fairly around the world.
To advance this goal, Xi announced that China will strengthen cooperation with a wide range of international organizations and regional partners. The initiative will include collaboration with countries and institutions across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the BRICS bloc to expand AI education, research, and technology development.
Xi's comments come as global competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, with governments increasingly debating AI governance, regulation, and equitable access to emerging technologies. By emphasizing international collaboration, China aims to position itself as a key contributor to global AI development while advocating for more inclusive participation in the digital economy.
The World Artificial Intelligence Conference has become one of China's flagship events for showcasing AI innovation and discussing the future of artificial intelligence with policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders. This year's conference is expected to focus on AI governance, technological breakthroughs, and international partnerships as countries seek to balance rapid innovation with responsible development.
Xi reiterated that international cooperation will play a critical role in ensuring AI delivers long-term benefits for humanity, calling for joint efforts to build an inclusive and sustainable AI ecosystem that supports economic growth and shared prosperity across both developed and developing nations.
