Global Geo-political Series: Washington leaks trigger diplomatic row with UK

The current administration in the United States has long been complaining of leakers within the intelligence community and the administration as they were disclosing selective classified information to the US media in Washington to support the Trump-Russia collusion story. And now these leaks have created a major diplomatic row with the United States’ closest ally, the United Kingdom.

The UK home secretary Amber Rudd expressed her disgust towards American security and intelligence services for releasing the details of the suicide bomber involved in the Manchester attack, while the investigation is still continuing.

Speaking at the Radio 4’s Today program, Ms. Rudd said, “….quite frankly the British police have been very clear that they want to control the flow of information in order to protect operational integrity, the element of surprise…….It is irritating if it gets released from other sources……I have been very clear with our friends that that should not happen again.”

When asked if the leaks hampered the investigation, Ms. Rudd said that she would go that far in her dismay against American security services. US officials appear to have leaked crucial information about the Manchester terror attack to the media before it had been confirmed by UK authorities. The Associated Press confirmed earlier reports on US TV news channels that US officials had named the suspect as Salman Abedi, 22, before either Greater Manchester Police or Downing Street had confirmed it.
