Global Geo-political Series: US-UK diplomatic rift widens with photo leaks to New York Times

The diplomatic rift between the two closest partners, the United States and the United Kingdom seems to be reaching a boiling point over the leaks from Washington with regard to this week’s Manchester attack. We at FxWirePro reported on this yesterday that the UK home secretary Amber Rudd registered her displeasure with the United States’ intelligence services, from where information on the Manchester suicide bomber was leaked in the media even before the British authority have released information to the press in its own country.

The reaction from Ms. Rudd came after the US broadcaster CBS disclosed the name of the suspected bomber Salman Abedi, citing US sources when British authorities were asking domestic media to withhold the information to protect the investigation. The rift widened on Wednesday after the New York Times published a series of detailed photographs taken from the Manchester bombing scene by the forensic specialist of the United Kingdom.

While the current director of National Intelligence Mike Pompeo is the person ultimately responsible for any leaks, whether he releases them or approves the release of these, this diplomatic rift has given the opportunity to the Trump administration to hunt for leakers within the administration in the name of national security and partnerships.

Here is a link to the New York Times story: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/05/24/world/europe/manchester-arena-bomb-materials-photos.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=b-lede-package-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

The leakers have been doing enormous damages by leaking selective, partial and sometimes false statements, and now it shows how much damage can be done by unauthorized leaks.
