Global Geo-political Series: Trump-Trudeau meeting next week

According to statements from the White House, US President Donald Trump is set to meet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday. This is the first meeting between the two nations, since Mr. Trump’s election win in November. The meeting is very crucial for both the parties. Canada is the biggest and closest neighbor of the United States, and historically the two nations have enjoyed a very close and friendlier relationship. To make the most of his secure border promise, President Trump surely needs a good relationship with Canada. Canada is the biggest trading partner of the United States, only second to China, in terms of value, of the goods exchanged. In 2015, the value of good exchanged by both parties was $500 billion.

One of the crucial objectives for Mr. Trudeau would be to secure the channels in such a manner that the trades between the two nations do not get hampered. President Trump has vowed to renegotiate NAFTA, calling it a job-killing deal for the United States. But, that not necessarily is bad for Canada. Mr. Trump hasn’t been much critical of Canada like he has been towards Mexico. A new bilateral trade deal could be as good as NAFTA or better.  Despite a large trading volume of $500 billion, the United States suffered only $15 billion trade deficit in 2015.

However, it is not clear, how the duo would get along, especially since Mr. Trudeau has taken opposite stance to Mr. Trump in many instances but has not been publicly critical. While Mr. Trump is trying to ban immigration from seven countries including Syria, Mr. Trudeau pledged to take up 25,000 Syrian refugees. They also differ on Climate change.
