Global Geo-political Series: Trump-Erdogan hints at new era of relations

The US President Donald Trump met with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the White House on Tuesday and held meetings on a broad range of issues from terrorism to trade. Mr. Erdogan who was eager to find support on the global stage after the controversial Turkish referendum that has been heavily criticized by the European Union hailed the meeting between the two by calling it a beginning of a new era of relations between Turkey and the United States. The White House said that the extensive talks marked a historic turn of the tide in relations between the two NATO allies, which strained under the previous administration of Barrack Obama.

It was evident that there will be a change in stance as President Trump during joint press conference equated PKK with ISIS and assured President Erdogan of US support of fighting against terrorism. Turkey was critical of the United States’ decision earlier this month to arm Syrian Kurds, which is a sister organization of PKK, the banned Kurdish Workers’ Party. President Trump said, “We support Turkey in the fight against terror and terror groups like Isis and the PKK, and ensure they have no safe quarter”

However, another issue remained unsolved in the meeting and that is the fate of the Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is in exile in the United States and is believed by President Erdogan to be behind last year’s military coup in Turkey.
