Global Geo-political Series: Trudeau to seek trade assurance at Trump meeting, Netanyahu to seek better relations and security alliance

After hosting Japanese Prime Minister last week at the White House and at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf resort over the weekend, President Trump will host two other foreign leaders in Washington this week; Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Trump will hold meeting with his younger Canadian counterpart on Monday. Based on reports, the Canadian Prime Minister would be looking to seek an assurance from President Trump that the close economic ties between the two nations would continue during his administration, despite the latter’s criticism of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). While the trade between the two is roughly balanced, Canada is the biggest exporter to the United States. The value of the goods traded between the two countries was $545 billion in 2016. While there are ideological differences, Mr. Trudeau has never publicly criticized Mr. Trump and the President has also not been critical of Canada.

Mr. Netanyahu would be meeting the President on Wednesday, where he is likely to seek a closer relation with the Trump administration, which was strained during the Obama administration. While Mr. Trump has praised the border wall fenced by Prime Minister Netanyahu, his administration said that the recent expansion of settlements in the west bank is not going to be good for peace. Mr. Trump said in the past he would seek to diffuse tensions between Israel and Palestine but called it the toughest deal on earth. He has appointed his son-in-law Jared Kushner as a peacemaker in the region. The duo is expected to have a good start of relationship as both have praised each other in the past.
