Global Geo-political Series: South Korea conducts bombing drills in response to North’s Japan flyover missile

South Korea conducted a major bombing drills in response to the latest missile launch by North Korea that traveled 2700 km, reaching a high altitude of 550 km passing through the airspace of Japan before plunging into the sea. In order to demonstrate overwhelming military force South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in reportedly ordered the bombing drill involving four F15K fighters and MK84 bombs.

According to Yonhap news agency of South Korea, Moon’s chief press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, said the bombing drill was ordered immediately after the National Security Council meeting convened to discuss possible counter measures Seoul could take against Pyongyang’s ballistic missile provocation. “We assessed North Korea’s provocations as extremely severe and decided to maintain a vigilant posture in preparation for the possibility of additional provocations by North Korea,” the chief of the National Security Council added. South Korea officials reportedly called Trump administration’s national security advisor H.R. McMaster and discussed the latest escalation.

These latest provocations by North Korea came after a long pause in testing which earned the country praise from the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and as South Korea and the United States participate in a joint 10-day military drill in the Korean peninsula.
