North Korea unveils plans to strike US military facilities in Guam

Guam is an incorporated United States’ territory in the western Pacific ocean which is home to one of the biggest military bases in the region. Military bases cover 29 percent of the island’s total land area. It is home to a US naval base, a coast guard sector, Anderson air-force base, naval computer, and telecommunications facility and more. All in all, it is one of the most important naval and air-force base that projects the power of US military in the region.

In recent days, the island has come to the focus of international media as North Korea threatened to attack the base if provoked and heightened its war-rhetoric since the United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC) imposed new sanctions on North Korea led by the United States.

In the latest report, North Korean state media has outlined details of the country’s Guam strike plan expected to be ready by mid-August. The attack will reportedly include four missiles fired over Japan and landing within a few dozen kilometers of US territory. Continuing the heated exchange with US President Donald Trump, who said that North Korean threat would be met with fire and fury likes of which the world has never seen before, Pyongyang’s state media outlet KCNA said that the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, will be presented with an elaborate plan of the attack by mid-August. According to KCNA news agency, the plan involves Hwasong-12 rockets which would cross the sky above Shimane, Hiroshima, and Koichi in Japan and will fly 3,356.7 km for 1065 seconds to reach Guam. However, the strikes are expected to be warning as rockets are envisioned to contact sea just 30-40 km away from the island.
