Global Geo-political Series: Is President Trump really good for Russia?

After the Republican candidate Donald Trump won the US election on November 8th last year, many in the United States and in the foreign capitals, a victory for the Russian President Vladimir Putin, who allegedly might have want Donald Trump to win because of the latter’s willingness for a greater cooperation with Russia on international matters and a restorations of the relation, which touched the lowest point since the cold war during the Obama administration. But the way things are taking place under the Trump administration, do not look pro-Russians at all.

  • President Trump has ordered a revamp of the military capabilities of the United States including the nuclear arsenal. He has also called for an increase in the military budget by $54 billion.
  • President Trump has called Iran a terrorist state, which is an ally of Russia.
  • The President has also targeted China and its huge trade surplus with the United States.
  • President Trump is also looking to open up the full potential of the energy sector in the United States, which means higher oil production in the United States. Oil is the most important commodity for Russia.

While Mr. Trump is likely to cooperate with Russia with regard to Syria and not likely to topple the current regime in Syria, the above actions are not in the interest of Russia.
