Global Geo-political Series: Germany-Poland relation deteriorates as Germany calls for Article 7 and Poland calls for damage payments over WWII

Relations between Germany and Poland at a boiling point over the current refugee crisis in Europe. Both have taken each other to the court as Poland refuses to accept any refugees, which is required under the European Migrant distribution agreement. Poland refuses to recognize the agreement, which was signed under the previous government.

Germany led the European Union is pushing for invoking Article 7 of the European treaty, under which Poland could lose its voting rights. In response to the threat, some of the Polish members of the parliament, led by Jarosław Kaczyński have called for Germany to pay 1.5 trillion Polish Zloty, equivalent to €350 billion over World War II killings and destruction. Marek Jakubiak, a deputy for the anti-establishment Kukiz' 15 grouping told public broadcaster Polish Radio: "The fact that we are a poor country does not come from the fact that we are idiots. The Germans burned our homeland. We lost 50 years. I do not want a war with the Germans, I do not want bad relations with Germany... The Germans have to pay for the damage done to Poland and then we will talk normally as partners.”

During the German invasion in WWII, German Nazi Party killed almost 6 million Polish people.
