Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could see the tide of the conflict changing when Russia joined that battle in Syria along with Iran in last September in support of the President and to fight against the Islamic State terrorist group. Now that tide is likely to turn into a wave of support as Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump won the election. Mr. Trump has been very critical of the current US strategy in Syria, where the US government is against Assad and Islamic State but providing arms to rebels and Kurdish militia. Mr. Trump said during his campaign that the United States is supporting troops they do not know.
However, it was unclear, whether Mr. Trump would talk the same or not, after the election and it turned out to be the same. Speaking to CBS news, Mr. Trump said his priority is taking out ISIS and to do that he is ready to work with Russia in the Middle East. While the anchor pointed out that Russia is bombing rebels who are fighting Assad, Mr. Trump said the same that the United States can’t afford to arm those who they do not know. With regard to removing Assad from power, he said that it is not that important, even stressed that removing Assad could turn out to be a mistake, same as removing Gaddafi in Libya.
Under Trump administration, the direction in Syria is likely to change more than any other areas compared to the current administration.
