“Gears of War 4” is out and reviews have been encouraging so far. It would seem that the fourth installment of the macho, muscular, testosterone-driven shooting franchise is delivering on many of its promises. As always, however, there are some caveats.
In terms of performance, Kotaku is palpably impressed by how well the game runs on the PC. As a series that was primarily an Xbox console exclusive, “Gears of War 4” almost seems like it was made specifically for the more diverse Windows platform.
The game can reach about 90 fps on powerful gaming rigs with most settings maxed out. When upping the resolution to 4K, the framerate goes down to a still playable 40fps, which is only to be expected. Those who have extremely high-end PCs will have no trouble getting an even better performance from the game, especially by following tweaking tips from both Nvidia and AMD.
Thanks to how PCs can be set up differently, however, not every gamer using the platform will have the same experience. Then again, the fact that “Gears of War 4” didn’t stutter and freeze as it was being tested is an encouraging development.
Now, with regards to the game’s features itself, Forbes does a good job laying out the details with its review. By and large, the latest numbered “Gears of War” game is a stellar addition that has amazing graphics and a huge number of graphical tweaks available to both Xbox One and PC players.
The cloud save feature is especially handy for cross-play gaming, which is perfect for both solo gaming or when playing with friends. Speaking of which, multiplayer has a ton of content and has top quality modes to make casual or competitive play a lot of fun.
Regarding the solo campaign, however, it would seem that the developers took the safe route. The story mode isn’t terrible but didn’t appear particularly excellent either. This is just one of the few quibbles that reviewers have had about the game, though, which does not detract from its other incredible qualities.
