“Fortnite” quickly marked its territory in the battle royale gaming genre when it launched about two years ago. But its success was apparently surpassed by EA’s “Apex Legends” despite its fairly silent launch last February.
Fortnite’s” update 8.30 seemingly confirms that developers of “Apex Legends” got some things right in terms of its unique gameplay features. This week, “Fortnite” players will have a chance to revive their teammates despite getting killed by an opponent — a respawn system that already sounds very similar to EA’s take on battle royale gaming.
The upcoming “Fortnite” feature is now being called Reboot Vans and is the highlight of update 8.30. It will be released on Wednesday, April 10. This also means that servers will be down for a certain period starting at 5 a.m. ET of the same day as developers prepare for update 8.30 to officially go live.
What are Reboot Vans? Epic Games has explained the basic functions of this new “Fortnite” feature. It is safe to say that Reboot Vans are practically “Fortnite’s” version of Spawn Beacons from “Apex Legends.
When “PlayerUnknown's Battleground” and “Fortnite” launched, players do not get a second chance once killed. Revives are only for players who are severely hurt. But in “Apex Legends,” teammates can be revived despite being eliminated. Within a limited time, a teammate in good health can retrieve the downed’s players flag and then bring it to one of the Spawn Beacons.
Respawns in “Fortnite” will seemingly work the same way as in “Apex Legends.” However, flags and Spawn Beacons are replaced with Reboot Cards and Reboot Vans by Epic Games. "Once activated, you'll definitely know, as a beacon and audio cue will be set off, informing nearby players to the reboot in progress and how many players will be arriving,” Epic Games community manager Nathan Mooney said. “Your squad will appear, one by one, on top of the van--ready to jump back into the match."
Aside from the Reboot Vans, update 8.30 is also expected to bring “technical improvements” on “Fortnite.” Players should check out Epic Games’ tweet to see how much free drive space they will need for the patch.
