Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has confirmed that he has been granted permanent U.S. residency through the EB-1A visa category, a pathway reserved for individuals with extraordinary abilities.
Speaking to Reuters on Monday, the former Brazilian lawmaker said the application process began about a year ago. Eduardo Bolsonaro has been living in the United States since early 2025, where he has strengthened ties with conservative political figures and members of the Trump administration.
His announcement comes as he faces legal troubles in Brazil. Eduardo Bolsonaro was sentenced in June to four years and two months in prison after Brazil’s Supreme Court found him guilty of seeking U.S. interference in the criminal proceedings involving his father. Jair Bolsonaro was previously sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for plotting a military coup following his defeat in Brazil’s 2022 presidential election to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Eduardo Bolsonaro rejected claims that he relocated to the U.S. to influence his father’s legal case, saying his move was motivated by concerns over what he described as political persecution by Brazil’s Supreme Court. He added that he intends to return to Brazil only if he receives amnesty.
The younger Bolsonaro has also faced criticism from political opponents, alongside his brother, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who is considered a potential presidential candidate. Critics allege the brothers’ lobbying efforts in the United States contributed to Washington’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on selected Brazilian imports, a measure scheduled to take effect on Wednesday.
Both Eduardo and Flavio Bolsonaro have denied requesting that the Trump administration impose tariffs on Brazilian exports.
Now holding a U.S. green card after previously receiving work authorization, Eduardo Bolsonaro said he values the freedom he has found in the United States, declaring, “At least here I am free.”
