“Doctor Who” Season 11 is going to be exciting for a lot of fans, and doubly so for women as the Thirteenth Doctor is a female. Following the traditional regeneration of Time Lords, a new actor – or actress in this regard – is now playing the well-beloved character in the form of Jodie Whittaker, Digital Spy reported.
"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice," said Chris Chibnall, the new showrunner. "[Jodie Whittaker’s] audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away.” Indeed, her acting chops can be seen in the recent trailer for “Doctor Who” Season 11, where Whittaker can be seen quickly speaking sentences and showing expressive eyes that are associated with the character.
While this is the case, it’s unsurprising that a lot of people are upset that a woman has been cast as the lead for “Doctor Who” Season 11 since a man has portrayed the character in its 54-year history. Some fans of the series are accusing BBC of pandering to the recent wave of feminism that has also taken over other popular franchises such as “Ghostbusters” and “Ocean’s Eight.”
Regardless, Whittaker has now been cast as the Doctor and it seems the actress will have to pull a lot of stops in order to please audiences. For her part, Whittaker said that she’s excited to be part of “Doctor Who” Season 11 and will represent what the character has always stood for: hope.
And with this hope comes new friends who will aid The Doctor in fixing whatever needs fixing in the upcoming installment. Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh), and Alan Cumming (King James I) are the new companions of the beloved character. “Doctor Who” Season 11 will premiere on Oct. 7 at 6.45 p.m. on BBC One.
