‘Doctor Strange’ Debuts Newest Trailer; Mads Mikkelsen’s Villain Inspired by Bruce Lee

Mads Mikkelsen is set to star in Scott Derrickson's 'Doctor Strange'

‘Doctor Strange’ revealed its newest trailer during the San Diego Comic-Con. Scott Derrickson made an appearance together with cast members and talked about how far off he was into production. Meanwhile, Mads Mikkelsen admitted that his character in the film was inspired by Bruce Lee.

According to Nerdist, the film’s newest trailer was recently revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con and was reportedly filled with Easter eggs. Rachel McAdam’s Christine Palmer a.k.a. the Night Nurse was spotted early in the trailer while Mads Mikkelsen’s evil Kaecilius also made an appearance.

It also featured more footage of Tilda Swinton’s The Ancient One, massive amount of magic, and other Doctor Strange accessories such as the Book of Vishanti and Cloak of Meditation.

Director Scott Derrickson was in attendance at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel together with lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch as well as McAdams, Swinton, Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong.

Derrickson told Collider that he implemented 3D technology for the mind-bending effects presented in the film in order to pay homage to creator Steve Ditko’s work. He said, “The 3D in the movie accentuates the trippiness of it all, you know. The Steve Ditko-Stan Lee comics were all about these weird visuals and we really used those as a source for the visuals in the movie… and yet there’s a textural quality to all of them as there was in the way that Ditko designed those early visuals that in 3D are just gonna give you more a sense of it being more present and more real.”

The filmmaker also revealed that they are now in the process of incorporating visual effects. He added, “We still have a couple of pick up shoots to do. Still doing some editing but, you know, it’s pretty much there. Still finishing a lot of VFX work – that’s where the big emphasis is is now.”

Meanwhile, Mikkelsen insisted that he didn’t see his character as a textbook villain. According to the Independent, he said, “Whether he’s bad or good, that’s up to you guys. He believes in a better world as well. His means of doing that, however, are just different than Doctor Strange’s, and there we have an issue and a conflict, but he does want to make a more beautiful place, like every good leader.”

The Danish actor also admitted that the Derrickson’s film was one of his more difficult projects especially because of his advancing age. Despite the struggles on-set and a couple of injuries, he still admitted that he loved the experience.

He said during a separate interview with Yahoo! Movies that the famous martial artist and cinematic icon Bruce Lee was the inspiration for his character. He said, “We have a lot of physicality going on, and it's martial arts, and one of my biggest heroes of all time is Bruce Lee. Who would've thought at the age of 50 I would get to be a miniature version of him?”

‘Doctor Strange’ is an upcoming superhero film intended as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase Three. It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016 in the United States.
