The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has been anticipated for some months now. But publisher Activision and developer Treyarch brought fans’ excitement on another level when they confirmed that the upcoming title will feature a battle royale gameplay.
In a reveal event held on Thursday, May 17, Treyarch announced some of the most important details fans have been wanting to learn about Black Ops 4. And, as many gamers might have already anticipated, it was confirmed that Black Ops 4 is going to feature the franchise’s own take on the increasingly popular gaming theme of battle royale.
Black Ops 4's battle royale mode is officially called “Blackout” which, according to developers, will be “combining Black Ops signature combat and the biggest map in Call of Duty history.”
Similar to already popular battle royale games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale, Blackout will match a certain number of players in every session. Players will have to defeat everyone else until they become the game's last man standing.
Meanwhile, it appears that Black Ops 4 developers are yet to finalize some significant details of the game’s battle royale mode. According to GameSpot, Treyarch’s studio design director, David Vonderhaar, confirmed that they have not yet decided the number of players that will battle it out in every Blackout match.
Black Ops 4 will also feature the franchise’s popular Zombies campaign and Multiplayer mode. Treyarch revealed that there will be three separate maps for the Zombies campaign namely "Voyage of Despair," "IX," and "Blood of the Dead.”
Notably, developers did not announce a single player campaign for Black Ops 4, which is easily one of the major changes in the upcoming game. However, Forbes noted that Black Ops 4 will still feature several solo Specialist missions where players can explore the game on their own.
Black Ops 4 will be released on Friday, Oct. 12 on PC (through Battle.net, not Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
