The synopsis for “Push Comes to Shove” posted on TV Guide reads, “Nathan (James Tupper) hosts a couples dinner for Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) and Ed (Adam Scott) to discuss a "parenting paradigm" for Abigail (Kathryn Newton).
Meanwhile, Celeste (Nicole Kidman) prepares for a city-council meeting about Madeline's play, and clashes with Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) over the prospect of her returning to work; Jane (Shailene Woodley) meets with Ziggy's (Iain Armitage) teacher to talk about classroom bullying; and Madeline stumbles upon a clue about Jane's past.”
In the upcoming episode, Madeline is set to have dinner with her husband and ex-husband to discuss parenting solutions for their eldest daughter Abigail. It seems that Madeline will stay busy as she goes snooping around on the internet and is confronted by the revelation of a major person in Jane’s mysterious past.
Celeste will be dealing with problems at home when her marriage with Perry continues to spiral downwards. She will get into more trouble with her abusive husband after they disagree about the prospect of her returning to work when she prepares for a city-council meeting for Madeline’s play.
In the previous episode, titled "Living the Dream," Celeste threatened to leave Perry after he physically assaulted her with the accusation of being deliberately left out of family plans. According to the recap posted on Vulture, Celeste attempted to convince herself that the violence in their relationship is justifiable since they just have a lot of anger despite loving each other. Although Celeste told their therapist that the abuse at home was only emotional and verbal, Perry admitted otherwise.
Meanwhile, Jane is set to meet with her son Ziggy’s teacher Ms. Barnes, who suggests that Ziggy will have to be medically evaluated after strong evidence of his bullying at school is presented. In the previous episode, Jane attempted to help Ziggy with a school assignment but the two clashed over Ziggy’s insistence of including his father’s name on the family tree. Jane eventually confided in Madeline that Ziggy was the result of a violent sexual encounter with a man named Saxon Banks.
‘Big Little Lies’ season 1’s episode 4, titled "Push Comes to Shove," is scheduled to air on March 12, 2017 on HBO. It was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by David E. Kelley. It will be followed by episode 5, titled "Once Bitten," scheduled to be released on March 19.
