Apple has yet to launch a device with a foldable screen, but another report claimed that the company has been working on it behind the scenes. Aside from the widely rumored foldable iPhone, the tech giant is reportedly developing a device designed to be a hybrid of MacBook and iPad.
Last week, Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young reported that Apple is working on a device with a foldable screen that measures around 20 inches. More details about the product have been reported in the latest edition of Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter by Mark Gurman.
The new report, however, describes the mystery device as a hybrid MacBook and iPad. Gurman said Apple had been developing a dual-screen device with a foldable screen for two years now. The secondary display would replace the physical keyboard and trackpad, making it look something similar to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold.
In Young’s earlier report, Apple is said to be planning a release sometime in 2026 for the foldable device. Guman notes that, if the time frame is proven accurate, the dual-screen, hybrid MacBook and iPad product could enter the market in the same year as Apple’s first AR glasses and Apple Car.
Tech companies like Apple are always developing new hardware products. But some of these projects either take many years to materialize, while others eventually get scrapped. That means the retail launch of the rumored foldable MacBook/iPad could still be tentative at this point.
Late last year, Oppo introduced the Oppo Find N as its first foldable smartphone. The reported Google Pixel foldable phone did not enter the market in 2021, as previous rumors suggested. But Young said earlier this month that the company had restarted its plans for the device for a potential launch later this year. Apple’s foldable iPhone, however, might still take a few years to be released.
In the same report, Young updated DSCC’s prediction, suggesting that a foldable iPhone might not be unveiled anytime before 2025. “The company does not appear to be in a hurry to enter the foldable smartphone market, and it may even take longer than that,” Young said in the report.
