Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s most senior executives and its former chief operating officer, is leaving the artificial intelligence company to launch a new venture, adding to a series of major leadership changes across the global AI industry.

Lightcap announced his departure Tuesday, saying he believes it is time to focus on the next challenges emerging in the rapidly evolving AI sector. He joined OpenAI in 2018 and became COO in 2022, playing a key role in the company’s commercial expansion, partnerships and transition from a research-focused organization into a major AI business.

In April, Lightcap moved out of the COO position to lead special projects and report directly to CEO Sam Altman. His exit now marks another significant change for OpenAI as the company continues to expand its AI products and prepare for a potential public listing.

The leadership reshuffle comes shortly after major changes at Google DeepMind. Alphabet reorganized the AI lab, with Demis Hassabis moving away from day-to-day management to become chairman of DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. Chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu is taking greater responsibility for operations, while longtime Google AI chief scientist Jeff Dean and several senior researchers are leaving to establish a new AI venture.

The changes highlight an increasingly competitive AI landscape, where companies are competing not only for advanced AI models, computing capacity and investment but also for highly sought-after executives and researchers.

Lightcap’s departure also follows Fidji Simo’s move away from her full-time OpenAI role in July due to extended medical leave. She is now serving as a part-time adviser.

Lightcap previously worked with Altman at Y Combinator before joining OpenAI. His departure comes as demand for AI technology continues to grow and major technology companies accelerate efforts to develop and commercialize increasingly capable AI systems.
