Reports have it that the production of “Altered Carbon” season 2 is in full swing by now. However, there is a possibility that fans will have to wait until 2020 to see it stream on Netflix.
There is not much information about the release date window of “Altered Carbon” season 2. Fans can only speculate based on the production time frame of season 1. Its filming reportedly concluded in June 2017, but the first 10 episodes were not released until February 2018.
Earlier reports indicate that the production of “Altered Carbon” season 2 is following the same timeline as season 1. It purportedly started last February and is expected to end this month. In this case, it is also possible that the second season will need the same duration for post-production leading to the speculated 2020 release date.
Producers have been fairly quiet about the show’s return. Netflix confirmed it has ordered “Altered Carbon” season 2 back in July 2018 along with the producers' decision to recast Takeshi Kovacs. Joel Kinnaman will not reprise the role, it will instead be played by Marvel star Anthony Mackie. The next official update only arrived last February to announce the main cast members for the second season.
Kinnaman's portrayal of the character was accepted well by fans. However, the series features the technology of preserving a person's consciousness in a cortical stack. It can then be transferred to another "sleeve" or body once the original vessel is fatally harmed. This explains why Kovacs can have a new face in “Altered Carbon” season 2.
As the saying goes, it is impossible to please everybody and it was apparently the case when Netflix announced the recasting for “Altered Carbon” season 2. However, even Kinnaman was on board with it and even said it has been the direction intended for the series.
“That was always the intention of the show, and I thought that that was a very cool concept, that the character would continue, but a new actor would play him for each season,” Kinnaman told Digital Spy about the changes in “Altered Carbon” season 2. “So I wouldn’t be surprised if in another season, we see a woman playing the same character. That’s the possibility when people can change bodies."
