I am Assistant Professor in International Political Economy (IPE) in the Department of Politics and International Studies. Prior to joining the University of Warwick, I studied at the University of Sheffield where I received my PhD in IPE in 2008.
Research interests:
My research relates to the international political economy of trade and development, with a focus on agriculture and the sugarcane industry in particular.
My PhD research (2005-2008) focused on the global politics of sugar trade regulation. It looked at the way policy is made in the European Union, the United States and at the World Trade Organization, and the distributive effects of liberalisation and protectionism.
My post-doctoral research (2009-2012) then focused on the impacts of corporate restructuring in the sugar industry on the rural poor. It involved fieldwork in the Caribbean and southern Africa and studies of new governance initiatives including Aid for Trade and certification schemes. This was funded first under an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and later, under a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship.
My future research (2012-) will consider, on the one hand, the developmental impacts of the EU's Economic Partnership Agreements, and, on the other hand, the influence of Brazil in remaking the international politics of food and energy security.
