Yamaha Motor Co Ltd has begun using green aluminum as a raw material for parts in Yamaha motorcycles and will gradually expand its usage in models.
This is the first time green aluminum is used in Japanese motorcycles.
"Green aluminum" is refined using renewable energy sources to emit less CO2 in its manufacturing than regular aluminum.
Aluminum parts account for 12 percent to 31 percent of the total vehicle weight of a motorcycle.
Recycled aluminum makes up around 80 percent of Yamaha Motor's aluminum utilization through the development of its technical and production capabilities and skills.
Green aluminum will be used for components that can still not be made from other recycled materials.
With its large-displacement and off-road competition motorcycles, Yamaha Motor will use green aluminum for a few parts as a first step.
Yamaha Motor Group is aiming to increase the number of models that use the material in the future as supply volumes permit as part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities by 2050.
