There are pros and cons to keeping a device updated with the latest version of Windows 10. These updates contain the most up-to-date patches that help computers remain secure from attacks and hackers. However, software updates also often come with bugs that affect some operations, in this case, VPN connections.

Windows 10 1903 update bug: VPN connection issues

In the latest update on the Windows 10 1903 support document for OS Build 18362.207, Microsoft informs users that they have identified an issue affecting the Remote Access Connection Manager (RASMAN) services. The said bug could force the RASMAN to stop working, prompting the error message “0xc0000005.”

The tech company reported that this glitch could be experienced on Windows 10 devices where users have manually configured the diagnostic data level to the non-default setting of 0. However, Microsoft added that the bug is only triggered when users enabled the Always On VPN (AOVPN) connection. Otherwise, if the VPN profiles and connections are to be set manually, the bug should not cause an issue.

When will it be fixed?

Microsoft has provided detailed instructions for two ways to mitigate the Windows 10 bug that involves manually configuring the default telemetry settings. This can be done by either following the group policy step or the registry step with detailed instructions over Microsoft's support page.

Whatever step is applied, there is a possibility that the RASMAN will not respond or function properly after applying these changes. In this case, users must restart their device. On the other hand, if the affected users do not feel confident in doing these configurations on their own, they will have to wait for an upcoming Windows 10 update that would contain a fix for this VPN connection bug. Microsoft estimates that the bug will be resolved before July ends.

What’s next for Windows 10?

The latest Windows 10 cumulative update, known as 1903, has just started to roll out last month. The update also comes with a new feature that directly informs users whether or not their device is ready to have it installed. Meanwhile, discussions about the next major update are already making headlines.

Microsoft opened the month of July by providing information about the 19H2 that is already live within the Windows Insider Program. But for the rest of the world, it is slated to be released in September.
