U.S. Vice President-elect JD Vance met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Sunday, just one day before he and President-elect Donald Trump are sworn into office. The meeting covered key issues such as fentanyl, trade balance, and regional stability, according to a statement from the Trump-Vance transition team.
Trump extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the inauguration, but Xi sent Han in his place. This diplomatic exchange follows a recent phone call between Trump and Xi, where the leaders discussed critical topics like TikTok, trade, and Taiwan. It was their first direct communication since Trump’s November election victory.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has expressed interest in visiting China after taking office. If the trip occurs, it will mark Trump’s second visit to the country as president, following his 2017 tour during an Asia-focused diplomatic mission.
These developments highlight the Trump administration's focus on U.S.-China relations, emphasizing economic cooperation and regional stability. The inauguration is expected to set the stage for further engagement between the two nations, with the potential visit by Trump to Beijing symbolizing a significant step in strengthening diplomatic ties.
With topics like fentanyl and Taiwan remaining central to the U.S.-China agenda, the early dialogue between the Trump-Vance team and Chinese officials reflects an intent to address pressing global and domestic concerns. The administration’s proactive approach may shape the future trajectory of this critical bilateral relationship.
