LOS ANGELES, April 13, 2018 -- The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce that its member clubs, the L.A. Wolves FC, La Maquina FC, Santa Ana Winds FC, and Sporting AZ FC will be competing in the First Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The U.S. Open Cup began in 1914 and is the oldest soccer tournament in the U.S. The 2018 edition will be contested by 94 teams from all levels of U.S. Soccer.
The First Round of the U.S. Open Cup is scheduled for May 9 as FC Golden State Force of the PDL host the L.A. Wolves FC (UPSL) at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, (Calif.). The Santa Ana Winds FC (UPSL) will face OC FC (NPSL) at Championship Stadium in Irvine, (Calif.).
In Arizona, La Maquina FC (UPSL) will battle FC Tucson (PDL) at Kino Stadium in Tucson, (Ariz.), while FC Arizona (NPSL) will host Sporting FC AZ (UPSL) at Riggs Stadium in Mesa, (Ariz.).
UPSL Commissioner Yan Skwara said, “We are excited that four UPSL clubs will be participating in the First Round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup. Our UPSL clubs will show quality play and fight and compete well. We wish all clubs the best of success in this great tourney.
In 2017, the L.A. Wolves were the longest-surviving UPSL club in the Open Cup, qualifying for the Third Round before falling 1-0 to OC SC of the United Soccer League (USL).
One year earlier, La Maquina FC of Santa Ana (Calif.) made the headlines when it forced the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS) to extra time in the Fourth Round before a 4-1 defeat.
Sporting Kansas City (MLS) is the defending U.S. Open Cup Champion.
MLS teams have won the U.S. Open Cup every year since 2000.

The UPSL club membership includes over 160 teams nationally as the league is affiliated with U.S. Soccer and USASA. The UPSL operates with a Promotion-Relegation system and runs two playing seasons in a 12 month window.
