US under Trump Series: Xi-Trump letter exchange, Abe-Trump summit

In an announcement last evening, the White House press secretary said that the US President Donald Trump has opted to exchange letters with the Chinese President Xi Jinping. In response to a congratulatory letter from the Chinese President on his inauguration, President Trump has reverted back saying that he looks forward to working with President Xi to develop a constructive relationship that benefits both the United States and China.

During his campaign and also after being elected Mr. Trump has been critical of China with regard to trade, latter’s adventure in the South China Sea, and North Korea. The US President has also expressed his disregard for One-China policy unless the latter secures a fair deal with the United States. Despite all his criticism, it is also important to note that Mr. Trump repeatedly said during the campaign that he doesn’t blame China for ‘horrible’ trade deals but his own country’s politicians. The duo may not secure a meeting before the next G20 summit.

Leader from another Asian giant, Japan, is set to meet the President on Friday. According to reports, the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to meet Mr. Trump on Friday and he is bringing with him promises of incremental investments from Japan in the United States, which will create thousands of jobs. Mr. Abe may not like Mr. Trump’s position on trade but Mr. Trump’s tough attitude towards China more than compensates for it.
